This is an example of serif font, on the image you can see that the serif areas are highlighted in red. The idea of serif font is mainly aesthetic. It creates a more professional image to the article on which it may appear, however sometimes serif font can be extreme and create difficulty in reading should the writing be rather small. Therefore is mainly used for headlines or large print on an article, and not used so much on smaller writing or the actual article.
This however is a Sans Serif font, in the image you will find that in comparison to the serif font the sans serif font lacks the additions of serifs at the ends of letters. This is useful as it can be clearer to read in comparison to serif fonts. However it gives and article a less professional look in comparison. Yet I believe that Sans Serif font would be used for the actual written article as it would be considered too plain to be used for anything such as a catchy headline, masthead or subtitle.
