Media Vocabulary

This is an example of the vocab used within the media.

Headline - A catchy title that attracts the reader to the main article.

Lead - The first paragraph of an article, this is usually either in bold or a slightly larger font that the rest of the article.

Drop Capitals - The large letter at the beginning of the article.

Caption - A description of the main image on the article.

Masthead - The name of the Magazine / Newspaper

Pugs - placed in the top corners of the magazine or newspaper, often referred to as the 'ears', and tend to contain information on offers etc.

Buzz words - words that catch the readers eye, such as 'wow', 'exclusive' etc.

Strap Line - A slogan that tends to be found at the bottom of the magazine, tends to stand out as it is on a different coloured background.

Puffs - Colourful sections of the magazine cover that tend to promote the features inside.

House Style - The distinctive design of a magazine that helps distinguish it from its competitors.

Motto - A memorable phrase that can be easily recognized to a brand

Sell Lines - Specific text on the front cover that helps to sell the magazine to its target audience,
